Massachusetts Avenue Project and Trinity are Partners!
Be part of this exciting new partnership. Below you will find a description of some of the hands on ways that we can volunteer. If you would like to volunteer either sign up on Sunday morning in the red carpet area or contact Margaret at margaretriley22@gmail.com or Leilani at black.leilani@gmail.com.
GG Farm House Handyperson - The Farm house is a 1.5 story 2 bedroom house adjacent to our urban farm
on Massachusetts Avenue. It is in need of many handy tasks including, weatherization measures, security,
painting, leaky roof in side doorway entrance, new curtains for windows, helping give advice for code issues
and general sprucing up. The Americorps volunteers stay there in the summer months which helps us have
eyes on the urban farm but it’s definitely in need of some TLC to make it more hospitable.
Mobile Market - The Mobile Market can occasionally use help with delivering produce, setting up produce stands and or assisting our Mobile Market Manager weighing vegetables, cleaning & bundling vegetables, cashing folks out with a particularly busy site. The Mobile Market can always use bags, rubber bands, twisty ties, plastic tubs, milk crates, folding tables, table cloths. Mobile Market season is from May-October.
Tutors - MAP is looking for people who can help tutor youth. The volunteers would be involved in homework help in the areas of Math (Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry) Science (Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics), and English. Many of our youth need specific help around the time of Regents exams and regular year end exams. Some need help using graphing calculators - often their schools don’t have enough of them so they don’t get enough practice to really learn to use them.
Teen Mentors - Teens that are involved at MAP are low income youth of color and they often need help thinking about their current academic situation, issues at school or home and their future (college or vocational training). We are particularly interested in “green” careers exploration for them but they often have some ideas about what interests them. Sometimes it’s just having consistent interaction with them, talking about their goals. We could use 2-3 people; hopefully with some experience mentoring teens.
Healthy Snacks - Growing Green is about food and youth. Often our youth do not eat school lunches, understandably sometimes the quality of food is really poor at school, so they are very hungry when they come to work. Sadly we have not always had the resources to help provide healthy snacks for our teens during the school year. The youth are on site 3 days/week from 4-6PM during the school year and during our summer program they are on site 4-5 days/week from 9AM-4PM. Healthy snacks are preferred. Things we’ve done in the past include celery and peanut butter, apples & cheese, pita and hummus, popcorn w/ olive oil and sea salt) We do have some vegetarians and some Muslim youth (no pork). We do have a fridge in the kitchen but not much cooking capacity at our center.
