Do You Hear An Echo In Here?

Cam discusses the new changes in liturgy this fall.

As noted in last week’s ENews, the worship team (Cam, Sare, Holly and Steve) met weekly through June and July to reflect on worship at Trinity and to nurture its development. Our goals were to enhance our welcome and hospitality to visitors, more effectively link Sunday worship with weekday programs, and keep worship connected to our every day lives.

Toward those goals we created a series of themes for the year that would be used in both worship and Trinity Place Center for Spirituality classes, and within the worship itself, we considered some new ways of integrating the music and readings with those themes.

One way we will weave the music, readings, sermon and prayers together is with what we have labeled a musical “echo.” An echo is a chant-like song that will insinuate itself instrumentally as well as vocally throughout the worship. For example, Krista might play the echo theme in the prelude and the congregation will then sing it as a chant several times between the Hebrew Scripture and Liturgical reading. The same song will then re-appear instrumentally with Krista improvising on it before the Gospel or during the prayers. We sought new music for this purpose and even wrote some new lyrics to familiar “secular” tunes.

Here are the themes for the full program year ahead:

Sept Welcome Back
Oct/Nov* “No Longer Settled”
Advent TBA
January “I will with God’s help:
Solidarity Month”
Winter “Holy Mysteries”
Lent TBA
Spring “Equinox: Everything’s Changing”

In peace,
Cam

*note* There will be two breaks from the Oct/Nov program: All Saints’ Day (November 2) and Thanksgiving Celebration (November 23)
